What is the best way to maintain a fire hydrant near Florence?

Hydrants should be examined at least once a year on a regular basis. Dry-barrel fire hydrants may need two inspections each year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

An example of a proper fire hydrant maintenance examination is provided below:

  • Remove one nozzle/pumper cap and listen for main valve leaking using a listening device.
  • Check the barrel for water or ice with a plumb-bob.
  • Pump water out of the hydrant barrel, wait a few minutes, and then test with the plumb-bob to ensure that no water is going through the hydrant lead's valve.
  • Replace the nozzle/pumper cap, giving enough room for air to escape. Allow air to vent from the loose cap by turning the hydrant a few turns, then tighten the cap.
  • Check for leaks around the flanges, nozzles/pumpers, seals, and operating nut with the hydrant fully pressured.
  • Flush for 10 to 15 seconds after partially closing the hydrant to unblock the drain ports.
  • Close the hydrant completely, then open it a quarter- to half-turn to alleviate strain on the thrust bearing or packing.
  • Remove a nozzle/pumper cap and, if necessary, add a diffuser and a hand valve for control. To eliminate foreign material, flush the hydrant.
  • Remove the diffuser and close the hydrant. Check for suction as the water drains from the barrel by placing your palm over the nozzle/pumper.
  • Notify utility and fire department employees as soon as possible if a hydrant becomes dysfunctional and requires repair or replacement.
